A B O U T
Ensemble Apex is a vibrant, creative, adaptive collection of charismatic young musicians in Sydney, united by a passion for giving magnetic performances of the often-underground repertoire we love and believe in. Together, led by Artistic Director and conductor Sam Weller, this ensemble endeavours to bring young people into the fold of classical music, breaking down cost and cultural barriers to accessing high quality, edgy orchestral performances. An Ensemble Apex program is designed to ignite intrigue and passion for orchestral music, whether it be an edgy ballet in the bowels of Sydney Town Hall, or with DJs and producers on stage for Sydney’s Vivid Festival. In its’ young life, this ensemble is already enriching the cultural landscape of Sydney, with unprecedented young audience numbers and online engagement.
"the most exciting new ensemble on the Sydney scene" - Limelight Magazine 2018.
In 2016 Ensemble Apex made its debut performance (in an unusual format- senza strings) presenting Leonard Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue and Riffs with the extremely talented Oliver Shermacher as soloist. The concert was an enormous success and lead to the establishment of Ensemble Apex in the format you see today. Oliver will return as a soloist in our 2019 season performing Copland's Clarinet Concerto.
Through their concerts, EA aims to create performances that are programmed not just for the classical music lover in an attempt to enhance a universal appreciation for classical and art music. The orchestra provides a platform for young elite musicians to perform concerti with a full orchestra, a rare and exciting opportunity! In 2017 we featured Alice Morgan from New Zealand performing Ibert's colourful Saxophone Concerto and in 2018 seasoned virtuoso violinist, Anna Da Silva Chen took centre stage for a fiery performance of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No.1. 2019 saw the anticipated return of Oliver Shermacher with Copland's Clarinet Concerto as well as principal cellist; James Morley with David Moran in Sollima's Violoncelles Vibrez! In 2020 Harry Ward takes centre stage with Sibelius' Violin Concerto whilst principal viola Dana Lee gives the Australian premiere of Suite in the Old Style by Dobrinka Tabakova. In December principal oboe Callum Hogan gives a performance of Nigel Westlake's Spirit of the Wild with the composer conducting!
In 2019 we hosted our inaugural Call for Scores competition. Young composers from around Australia submitted orchestral scores for consideration to be included in our 2020 season. Ben Robinson is the inaugural winner and his piece 'Propulsive Instability' will be premiered in December 2020.
Whilst we aren't performing our main season concerts we are happy to work on events and projects, providing an orchestra or smaller group of musicians for any occasion. We have worked with DJ's as part of Sydney's VIVID festival as well as alongside Grammy Award Winning artist Lorde.
